E-shops to learn from! –Part 3 Games Shops

by Karolina Dryja on 6th December 2011

People love playing and buying games. They very often want one to work on many devices, so there are quite a number of games’ versions to work on different platforms, starting from PlayStation, PC, Xbox and finishing on a mobile device. To provide game geeks with all they need, one shouldn’t also forget about extensions, devices and maybe even some gadgets including clothes and theme figures.

Now, that’s quite a number of things to put into one eshop. Not to mention, that you can go with the flow and choose also to sell dvd’s and music. However, to do it the right way you really need to focus on providing the best possible user experience at your webshop, as game’s buyer are rather exacting customers.

Let’s see how the best online shops (according to imrg.com) of that sort manage to attract clients.

1. Hmv.com

Once you come across this shop you can clearly feel the upcoming Christmas. The background is decorated with fairy lights and it makes you want to buy gifts! The e-merchandising exam passed!
There’s obviously much more to the success of hmv.com and that would be the clear, well-divided categories and a huge search box. Let’s not forget about the “coming soon” section, as games are something that people wait for, that’s an extremely useful feature to show your clients what to expect in the nearest time on your e-commerce website.

Yeah, that’s the bottom of the page. “Offers” section, because good eretailers know what their clients want and are able to recommend certain products. Moreover, here we again get the categories, so once we scrolled down, just to take a look, we don’t have to move up to start browsing for our purchase.
The personal touch can be seen in the gray boxes below categories. The hmv brand organizes competitions, events and offers tickets and extra treats to their clients. Personally speaking, I’d really feel rewarded for buying in hmv.com

Finally, about the product page, as usually it is full of sharing options, ratings and eshops’ policy. However, here we have also a wish list, so the customer can add the game, think it over and later choose what he or she wants most out of previously added items.

2. Gamestop.com

Another brilliant Christmas touch can be found at gamestop.com, the gift guide. Gamestop.com seems to know exactly that before Christmas there are not only average costumers coming, but also people looking for presents, that don’t know anything about your products. A great way to earn then, is by helping the Christmas clients to find something that their befriended or related game’s geek will enjoy. That way, not only do we please the actual costumer but also the person who receives the gift and who may want to check us out after the Holiday season is over.

Traditionally the product page lets you share your findings and informs you about the purchase conditions. However, here you get ‘jump to’ section, so right from the product page you can check via reviews, videos and screen whether the product is as fun as it claims to be.

Here is the spot at gamestop.com to check whether the customer really wants the game. There is a video and a screenshot available, and still the eshop owner can relax, because even if after analyzing the game our game geek will decide not to buy, there are still recommendations below. That way the customer can switch to other products of the same store easily. That’s simply convenient and reduces the number of disappointed costumers leaving.

3. Game.co.uk

The last but not the least for today is game.co.uk. The eshop doesn’t differ much from the previous two, however browsing through it I came across a great feature – customizable newsletter! It’s just so logical, if an eshop owner sells a variety of different items, why would I want to read about loan mowers while I’m interested only in the garden furniture?

Well, at game.co.uk I filter the newsletter, so that I only read what I’m interested in. Wouldn’t that increase the rate of your emails read?

The bottom of the page is all clear and informative. Not only do you get the most watched, most reviewed and most searched but you also have extremely rewarding “top user review”, oh how good to be the top user! That’s not all, to encourage eshoppers even more game.co.uk organizes a competition and what I like the most, you can choose your language. Language choice possibility only indicates that the webshop knows its costumers very well and cares for their convenience at the website.

Finally, the product page – typically, for such shop you have a “wish list” tab, reviews and product summary. Also video is obligatory and some screenshots, which are obviously here. The one thing I lack here is the lack of clear eshop’s policy concerning payment, delivery and returns. However, in general this is a customer-friendly, personalized eshop!

All of the presented eshops have something that makes them extremely successful. For a start the ‘wish list’, crucial in those kinds of webshops, trailers, reviews and recommendations, without these nobody would even bother to spend their money on a game. However, my personal favorite is the customizable newsletter, nothing better to personalize your contact with a client!

What do you think of the presented eshops? What about their features, do you find them useful?
